Capone 1 by Jahquel J.
From the first page to the last, Capone is an attention grabber. This book held my attention through every page and at the end it left me longing to know what was going to happen in the next book.In the first paragraph the author, Jahquel J., had me hooked. Not to quote her exactly, the first paragraph asked the question, how can I be in love with the love of my life’s brother-in-law, the nosey-ness in me was like WHAT?
And boy was I thinking so wrong.
I was thinking that she was saying that the character had been cheating with their in-law and had fallen in love. I’m unsure if that was her intention and what she decided would be her attention grabber, but it deeeeefinitely worked on me. Did it work on you as well? Or did you immediately understand what she was saying? Let me know in the comments. In book one we meet Erin, Jaiden (Erin’s brother), Aunt Josephine who they call Jo (Erin’s auntie), Ryai (Erin’s cousin), Nahiem (Erin’s first love), Timmy (Jaiden’s friend and foe), and the legendary Capone (judge yo maw I said what I said lol). There’s more but for now they’re who matter because they are the main characters.
My girl Erin was full of understandable trauma, and I wish she would’ve gotten therapy from the jump. She babied Jaiden through and through and to be honest I kind of understood why he rebelled in the way that he did. Even though I understand Erin’s reasons for why she treated and protected Jaiden the way that she did I don’t know why she thought he wouldn’t at least smoke weed. They kept all the family secrets from him, she barely let him outside, and he was living life without parents if you ask me that breaths WEED for young men.
They lost both of their parents early in life. Both deaths were at the hands of their father. The author starting the actual booking with this back story had me like “huh?”. I mean for the first page to be Erin and Capone’s thoughts of each other and the prologue to be the story of their parents’ death my mind was blown. I had no clue where this book was going but my nosey ass just had to stay the course keep reading and find out what this love triangle was that the first page spoke about.
For Timmy to be one of the biggest fuck ups in the book, as Erin suspected, had he not been around Erin and Capone would have never crossed paths. At his first site of her Capone knew what he wanted and I’ll be damned if he didn’t get it. Capone and Nahiem were like brothers; Nahiem was Capone’s right hand. Nahiem loved Erin until he went to prison and lost contact with her, we later found out that him losing contact was on purpose. So, I thought this would cause a rift between Capone and Nahiem, because Capone came on the gate with it didn’t he? But then we find out that Nahiem was married to Capone’s sister and Capone played no games about her or anything else for that matter.
We get introduced to Capone Delgato and the Delgato family and the story FLIPS…in a toxic nontoxic good way may I state. Capone was definitely the man and stood tall on business at all costs. Is it just me or the way that man protected everyone, handled business, acknowledged his emotions, loved hard, and fought sickle cell at the same time was EVERYTHING? Did he come with baggage? Hell yeah, just like all of the rest of them but he handled it all well, in my opinion.
The Delgato family came from humble beginnings, and the sons Cappadonna and Capone (twins) had turned things around for the entire family big time. The were from Barbados and came to the US as immigrants to give their children a better chance, you know the usual rah rah bullshit that immigrants talk to come over to Merikkka chile. The mother and father were still together, and they had a sister Capri.
The way Capone came into Erin’s life was almost like a knight in all black armor. It was like each time she found herself in a sticky situation there he was to save the day, and I like that for her.
~As I type this I kind of hate that I’m falling for the whole Cinderella fairytale bullshit but hell when it comes to books I’mma fall for it every time and be reading it saying awwww. Clearly, I watched some of those fucking princesses growing up lol. ~
But that night at that block party…first of all I knew when Nahiem asked Capone to go and he didn’t give a definitive answer that he was going, it was going to be the same party as Erin and Ryai, and for some reason somehow, he was gone show his ass. When he put the dude’s face on the grill I hollered laughing because that what dude, get being rude for no reason. Like everybody just comes to his ghetto ass parties I mean they did but he knew damn well he’d never seen her before. He seemed like the type to know every female by face that walked by with his big fat fonky nasty tail self.
Is it just me but I knew when Ryai found out who was into Erin that she would be a hater? I don’t know what it is, but I just felt she was gone be a hater.
Erin tried to give Capone a little push back, but my boy wasn’t going for it throughout the book he was putting that pressure on her and I knew she was gone fold. I would’ve folded when he found me on my bus route Ian gone hold you, but she held it out longer than I expected. But Capone came in and swept her right on up and played no games about her. He also didn’t play no games with her in that bedroom, theater room, or living room and I loved that for us, the readers and Erin. Ian gone lie I do wish the writer would go more into detail on the bedroom scenes but maybe she’s not comfortable doing so or something. Idk but I do wish I had more than a glimpse of what my boy Capone was giving. But I guess, maybe, she did that in light of “leaving something to imagination”. Naw give it to me straight I want to see lol…well, read but still hell.
I loved how Capone stepped in and built a friendship or relationship with everyone in Erin’s family that was consistently around her, separate of her. His relationship with them all felt so genuine. The way that Jaiden navigated towards him was cute and he gained trust with him with little effort. Because Jaiden is so impressionable I’m glad he wasn’t the type to take advantage of that.
Now on the other hand there’s Trilla, another big fat fonky nasty sucka. He is probably the most unliked male in the whole series for me. To convince Timmy to shoot Jaiden is crazy to me. I knew Timmy would be a pain in the ass, but I didn’t expect that twist of events. However, with a mother like Tasha, are we really surprised? Hell no! At least I hope that’s your answer because hell it’s the truth. Then on top of that to also shoot Joie is crazy too. Like were the two of them fucking or naw? Something isn’t right I gotta keep my eye on that. Something is telling me it’s more to that story because why were those two arguing before Jaiden walked up? And then who argues with a pregnant teenager? I guess a teenage boy huh? Valid you won that.
